Experience the Magic of Our Reindeer – A Day to Remember!
A unique, unforgettable wildlife experience in the heart of Jämtland! Come and hike with our reindeer on the trail of Saint Olav, and explore the forest alongside our beautiful reindeer.
St. Olav – The Viking King Who Became a Saint
St. Olav, also known as Olav Haraldsson, was a Viking king of Norway who lived from 995 to 1030. Before becoming king, he travelled widely across Europe as a Viking warrior and was baptized as a Christian in France.
As king, Olav worked to unite Norway and establish Christianity as the national religion. He died in the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. According to legend, miracles occurred at his grave, and just one year later he was declared a saint.
St. Olav became Norway’s national saint and one of the most important medieval saints in Northern Europe.
St. Olav’s Way (St. Olav’s Trail) is a network of ancient pilgrimage routes leading to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, where St. Olav is buried.
For more than 1,000 years, pilgrims have walked these paths seeking spiritual reflection, healing, or adventure. During the Middle Ages, Nidaros was one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage destinations, comparable to Rome and Santiago de Compostela.
Today, St. Olav’s Way stretches across Norway and Sweden, offering breathtaking landscapes, cultural history, and a chance to walk in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims.
Half day tour with lunch
We hike for a total of approximately 3 hours, with a break for lunch. The entire experience lasts about 4–5 hours. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to try leading a reindeer and gain knowledge about Swedish nature, reindeer, and the journey and life of Saint Olav. The guide and the reindeer carry the lunch. Extra clothing and your water bottle, you carry in your back pack.
Lead a reindeer!
We will bring two reindeer on the tour, so you can try leading one for a while and really tune in with these magical creatures. When someone else in the group walk the reindeer you have time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The reindeer have soft velvet covered antler this time of year, so there is no risk of bumping into a pointy antler when leading them.
What can we expect in Sweden in May?
In may, the mosquitos have not yet been hatched from their eggs, so we can enjoy nature without those annoying little insects. The temperature use to be very nice for hiking, not to cold and not yet to warm.
You need water proof hiking boots, a wind proof jacket and a warmer layer to bring on the tour.
How to get there
You get to the starting point near Alsen with your own car. We walk about 3 km, have lunch, and walk back the same way. If you are less than 8 people booking the tour, there might be another group joining us. If you want an exclusive tour for only your group or family, you have to pay for 8 participants.
